A “something for everyone” day at Pine Knot

pineknot0178 smOctober 11, 2014 was chock-full of Foundation activity, with the annual meeting and a “Picnic at Pine Knot,” Teddy Roosevelt’s cabin in southern Albemarle County, VA.

Several area organizations lent support to the day’s success.  St. Anne’s Christ Church Glendower, a mile away from Pine Knot, allowed use of its Parish House for meetings of the 500YFF directors and Scientific Advisory Board. Recognizing the kinship between the 500YFF’s mission and Roosevelt’s conservation legacy, the Edith and Theodore Roosevelt Pine Knot Foundation granted use of the historic venue.  Paula Beazley, the Pine Knot
Foundation chair, provided illuminating tours and information.

Jacob-Powel smTables and chairs, on loan from the Batesville, VA, Ruritans, were set up on the porch, due to weather, and decorated with fall colors and gourds. Lunch was generously provided by Revolutionary Soup of Charlottesville. Owner Will Richey (who also owns the Whiskey Jar and Alley Light restaurants) said he was “glad to help trees, especially old ones.”  Jacob Powell, executive director of the Virginia Conservation Network, spoke to the group. Then Tom Dierauf, former director of research for the Virginia Department of Forestry, led a nature walk.
